How to set up dynamic content collections on Wix
Quick Answer
Dynamic content collections in Wix allow you to store, organize, and display content automatically across your site. You'll create a database collection, add content fields, and connect it to dynamic pages for automated content management.
Prerequisites
- A Wix website with a premium plan
- Basic understanding of Wix Editor
- Content ready to organize into collections
- Access to Wix database features
1
Access the Content Manager
From your Wix dashboard, click on Content in the left sidebar, then select Content Manager. If this is your first time, click Get Started to enable the Content Manager for your site.
Tip
The Content Manager is only available on premium Wix plans, so ensure your site is upgraded before proceeding.
2
Create a New Collection
Click the + Create Collection button in the Content Manager. Choose Start from Scratch or select a template that matches your content type. Give your collection a descriptive name like
Blog Posts, Products, or Team Members.Tip
Collection names should be descriptive and reflect the type of content you'll store, as this affects URL structure.
3
Configure Collection Fields
Add fields to your collection by clicking + Add Field. Choose from field types like Text, Rich Text, Image, Date & Time, or Number. Set field properties including:
- Field name and key
- Required vs. optional
- Default values
- Validation rules
Tip
Plan your field structure carefully as changing field types later can affect existing content and connected elements.
4
Set Collection Permissions
Click on Settings & Actions > Permissions to configure who can view and edit your collection. Options include:
- Site content - Public viewing
- Admin - Admin-only access
- Site member content - Member-specific content
Tip
For most dynamic content like blogs or portfolios, set permissions to 'Site content' for public access.
5
Add Content Items
Click + Add Item to create your first content entry. Fill in all the fields you configured, upload images, and add rich text content. You can also:
- Import content from CSV files
- Duplicate existing items
- Set publish status and dates
Tip
Add at least 2-3 items initially to see how your dynamic pages will look with real content.
6
Connect Collection to Dynamic Pages
Go to your Wix Editor and add a Dynamic List or Dynamic Item Page. Click Connect to Data and select your collection. Choose which fields to display and customize the layout. For dynamic pages, go to Pages > Dynamic Pages and connect your collection.
Tip
Dynamic pages automatically generate URLs based on your content, creating SEO-friendly individual pages for each item.
7
Configure SEO and Publishing
In the Content Manager, click on Settings & Actions > SEO to set up dynamic SEO tags using collection fields. Configure:
- Page title templates using field values
- Meta descriptions
- URL slug patterns
Tip
Use dynamic field values in SEO templates like {title} or {description} to automatically generate unique meta data for each item.
Troubleshooting
Content Manager option is missing
Ensure your site has a premium plan active. The Content Manager is not available on free Wix plans. Upgrade your plan through Subscriptions in your dashboard.
Dynamic pages not displaying content
Check that your collection permissions are set to 'Site content' and that items are published. Also verify the data connection in your dynamic page elements.
Images not appearing in dynamic content
Ensure image fields are properly connected and that images are uploaded to the Media Manager. Check that image URLs are not broken and files are under the 25MB limit.
Collection fields cannot be modified
If a collection is already connected to site elements, some field changes are restricted. Disconnect the collection from all elements, make changes, then reconnect. Always backup your data first.
