How to trim and cut clips on Screen Studio

Quick Answer

Trimming and cutting clips in Screen Studio involves selecting your clip in the timeline, using the trim handles or blade tool to make precise cuts, and adjusting the clip duration. The process is intuitive with drag-and-drop functionality and real-time preview.

Prerequisites

  1. Screen Studio installed and activated
  2. Video recording imported or recorded in Screen Studio
  3. Basic familiarity with Screen Studio interface
  4. Video file accessible in your timeline
1

Import or select your video clip

Open Screen Studio and locate your video in the timeline. If you need to import a new video, click the Import button or drag your video file directly into the timeline area. Your clip will appear as a blue bar in the timeline with audio waveforms visible below.
Tip
You can also record directly in Screen Studio by clicking the red record button if you haven't created your clip yet.
2

Position the playhead for trimming

Click and drag the white vertical playhead to the exact position where you want to make your cut. Use the preview window to see the current frame. You can also click anywhere on the timeline to jump the playhead to that position, or use the left/right arrow keys for frame-by-frame precision.
Tip
Hold Shift while using arrow keys to jump in larger increments for faster navigation.
3

Use the blade tool to cut clips

Press B on your keyboard to activate the Blade Tool, or click the blade icon in the toolbar. Click on the timeline where the playhead is positioned to make a cut. The clip will split into two separate segments. Press V to return to the selection tool when finished cutting.
Tip
You can make multiple cuts by keeping the blade tool active and clicking at different positions on the timeline.
4

Trim clip edges with handles

Select a clip by clicking on it, then hover over the left or right edges until you see the trim cursor (double-headed arrow). Click and drag the edge inward to trim the beginning or end of the clip. The preview window will show the new start/end frame as you drag.
Tip
Hold Option/Alt while dragging to create a slip edit, which changes the in/out points without affecting clip duration.
5

Delete unwanted clip segments

After cutting, select any unwanted clip segments by clicking on them. Press Delete or Backspace to remove the selected segments. The remaining clips will automatically snap together unless you hold Option/Alt while deleting to leave gaps.
Tip
Use Cmd+Z (Mac) or Ctrl+Z (Windows) to undo any accidental deletions.
6

Fine-tune with precise timing

Double-click on any clip to open the Inspector Panel where you can enter exact timecodes for In Point and Out Point. You can also adjust the Duration field directly. Use the format 00:00:00:00 (hours:minutes:seconds:frames) for precise control.
Tip
The Inspector Panel also shows clip speed settings if you need to adjust playback speed after trimming.
7

Preview your edits

Press Spacebar to play your timeline and review your cuts. Use I and O keys to set new in and out points for the entire timeline if needed. The preview will play in real-time showing your trimmed clips with smooth transitions.
Tip
Press J, K, and L for reverse play, pause, and forward play respectively for professional-style review controls.

Troubleshooting

Clips won't trim or cuts aren't working
Make sure the clip is selected (highlighted in blue) and you're using the correct tool. Press V for selection tool or B for blade tool. Check that the clip isn't locked by looking for a lock icon.
Audio and video become out of sync after cutting
Right-click on the clip and select Link Audio and Video to keep them synchronized. If already linked, try selecting both tracks before making cuts.
Trimmed clips leave black gaps in timeline
This happens when clips don't snap together. Select all clips after the gap and drag them left to close the space, or use Ripple Delete by pressing Shift+Delete when deleting segments.
Can't see trim handles or cursor changes
Zoom into the timeline using Cmd/Ctrl + Plus for better precision. Make sure you're hovering exactly over the clip edges and the clip is selected first.
