How to customize advanced shadow settings on Screen Studio
Quick Answer
Access advanced shadow settings through Screen Studio's Effects panel by selecting your recording layer and navigating to Shadow properties. Customize blur radius, opacity, offset distance, and color to create professional drop shadows for your screen recordings.
Prerequisites
- Screen Studio installed and activated
- Basic familiarity with Screen Studio interface
- Understanding of video editing concepts
- A recording project already created
1
Open Effects Panel
Launch Screen Studio and open your recording project. In the timeline, select the recording layer you want to add shadows to. Click on the Effects panel in the right sidebar, or press
E to toggle the effects panel.Tip
Make sure your recording layer is selected before accessing shadow settings, as effects are applied per layer.
2
Navigate to Shadow Properties
In the Effects panel, scroll down to find the Shadow section. Click the Enable Shadow checkbox to activate shadow effects for the selected layer. The advanced shadow controls will appear below once enabled.
3
Adjust Shadow Blur and Opacity
Use the Blur Radius slider to control the softness of the shadow edge. Values range from 0 (sharp) to 100 (very soft). Adjust the Opacity slider to control shadow transparency, typically between 20-60% for realistic effects.
Tip
Start with a blur radius of 15-25 and opacity of 30-40% for natural-looking shadows.
4
Configure Shadow Offset
Set the X Offset value to move the shadow horizontally (positive values move right, negative move left). Adjust the Y Offset to move the shadow vertically (positive values move down, negative move up). Typical values range from 5-20 pixels.
Tip
For realistic lighting, use slight positive X and Y offsets (like 8x, 12y) to simulate light coming from the top-left.
5
Customize Shadow Color
Click the Shadow Color swatch to open the color picker. Choose from preset colors or use the color wheel for custom colors. For realistic shadows, use dark grays (#333333) or blacks with reduced opacity rather than pure black.
Tip
Avoid pure black shadows - dark grays create more natural and professional-looking results.
6
Fine-tune Shadow Distance
Use the Distance slider to control how far the shadow appears from the original layer. This creates a floating effect. Combine with blur radius adjustments to maintain shadow realism as distance increases.
Tip
Higher distance values work best with increased blur radius to maintain the illusion of depth.
7
Apply Shadow Presets
Click the Presets dropdown in the Shadow section to access built-in shadow styles like Soft Drop Shadow, Hard Shadow, or Floating Effect. Select a preset and then fine-tune individual parameters as needed.
Tip
Presets provide excellent starting points - you can always modify preset values to match your specific design needs.
8
Preview and Export
Press
Space to preview your recording with the new shadow effects. Use the Preview Quality setting in the top toolbar to see shadows at full resolution. When satisfied, export your project using File > Export or Cmd+E.Tip
Preview at 100% quality to accurately see shadow effects before final export.
Troubleshooting
Shadow effects not visible in preview
Ensure the recording layer is selected and Enable Shadow is checked. Increase shadow Opacity and Distance values to make shadows more visible.
Shadows appear pixelated or blocky
Increase the Blur Radius value and ensure Preview Quality is set to 100% in the top toolbar. Lower quality previews can make shadows appear pixelated.
Shadow settings reset after closing project
Save your project using
Cmd+S before closing. Shadow settings are saved with the project file, not globally. Consider creating a Template with your preferred shadow settings.Performance lag when using multiple shadow effects
Reduce Preview Quality to 50% while editing. Use Proxy Mode in preferences for better performance, and render shadows only during final export.
