How to add custom fields to deals on Pipedrive

Quick Answer

To add custom fields to deals in Pipedrive, navigate to Settings > Data fields > Deals, click Add field, configure your field type and properties, then save. The new custom field will immediately become available in your deal records and can be used for filtering and reporting.

Prerequisites

  1. Active Pipedrive account with admin permissions
  2. Understanding of your deal data requirements
  3. Access to your company's Pipedrive settings
  4. Knowledge of the field types you want to create
1

Access Pipedrive Settings

Log into your Pipedrive account and click on your profile avatar in the top-right corner. Select Company settings from the dropdown menu. This will open the main settings dashboard where you can manage various aspects of your Pipedrive configuration.
Tip
Ensure you have admin permissions before proceeding, as only admins can create custom fields.
2

Navigate to Data Fields

In the left sidebar of the settings page, locate and click on Data fields. This section manages all custom fields across different data types in Pipedrive. You'll see options for Contacts, Organizations, Deals, Products, and other data types.
3

Select Deal Fields

Click on the Deals tab to view all existing deal fields. You'll see both system fields (default Pipedrive fields) and any custom fields that have already been created. The interface shows field names, types, and their current status.
Tip
Review existing fields to avoid creating duplicates and ensure consistency in your data structure.
4

Add New Custom Field

Click the blue + Add field button in the top-right corner of the deals section. A modal window will appear with field configuration options. This is where you'll define all the properties of your new custom field.
5

Configure Field Properties

Fill in the Field name (this appears as the label). Select the appropriate Field type from options like Text, Number, Date, Single option, Multiple options, Person, Organization, or Monetary. Configure additional settings such as whether the field is required, its visibility, and any default values or options.
Tip
Choose field types carefully as they cannot be changed after creation without losing existing data.
6

Set Field Options (if applicable)

For Single option or Multiple options field types, add your predefined choices in the Options section. Click + Add option for each choice and enter the option text. You can reorder options by dragging them and set default selections if needed.
Tip
Keep option lists concise and meaningful to ensure user adoption and data quality.
7

Configure Advanced Settings

Set the field's Visibility (who can see the field), mark it as Required if necessary, and choose whether it should appear in the Add deal form. You can also set permissions for who can edit the field values and configure filtering options.
Tip
Consider your team's workflow when setting visibility and requirement options.
8

Save and Activate the Field

Review all your settings and click Save field to create the custom field. The field will immediately appear in your deal records, forms, and be available for use in filters, reports, and automations. Navigate to any deal to verify the field appears correctly.
Tip
Test the new field with a sample deal to ensure it works as expected before rolling out to your team.

Troubleshooting

Custom field not appearing in deal forms
Check the field's visibility settings in Data fields > Deals and ensure it's set to appear in the Add deal form. Also verify your user permissions allow you to see the field.
Cannot edit or delete existing custom field
Only users with admin permissions can modify custom fields. Check your user role in Settings > Users and contact your admin if you need field changes.
Field type options are limited
Pipedrive's field types are fixed based on your subscription plan. Essential plans have fewer field type options than Advanced or Professional plans. Consider upgrading your plan for more field types.
Lost data after changing field type
Field type changes can cause data loss and are generally not reversible. Always export your data before making field type changes and consider creating a new field instead of modifying existing ones with data.
