How to create basic dashboards on Mixpanel
Quick Answer
Creating dashboards in Mixpanel involves navigating to the Dashboards section, adding reports through the dashboard builder, and customizing visualizations. You can combine multiple charts and insights to monitor key metrics in one centralized view.
Prerequisites
- Active Mixpanel account
- Basic understanding of your tracked events
- Admin or dashboard creation permissions
- Some data already tracked in your Mixpanel project
1
Navigate to the Dashboards section
Log into your Mixpanel account and click on Dashboards in the left navigation menu. Once there, click the Create Dashboard button in the top right corner to start building your new dashboard.
Tip
If this is your first dashboard, Mixpanel may offer templates based on your industry or use case.
2
Name and configure your dashboard
Enter a descriptive name for your dashboard in the Dashboard Name field. Choose whether to make it Private (only you can see it) or Shared (team members can view it). Click Create to proceed to the dashboard builder interface.
Tip
Use descriptive names like 'Weekly User Engagement' or 'Product Funnel Analysis' for better organization.
3
Add your first report
Click the Add Report button or the + icon on your empty dashboard. This will open the report selector where you can choose from Insights, Funnels, Retention, or Flows. Select Insights to start with a basic event analysis chart.
4
Configure your Insights report
In the Insights builder, select the event you want to analyze from the Events dropdown. Choose your visualization type (line chart, bar chart, etc.) from the chart options. Set your date range using the Date Range picker, then click Save to add this report to your dashboard.
Tip
Start with high-level events like 'Page View' or 'Sign Up' to get familiar with the interface.
5
Add additional reports
Click Add Report again to include more visualizations. Try adding a Funnel report by selecting it from the report types, defining your funnel steps, and configuring the conversion window. You can also add Retention reports to track user return behavior.
Tip
Aim for 4-6 reports per dashboard to avoid information overload while maintaining comprehensive coverage.
6
Arrange and resize your reports
Once you have multiple reports, drag them around the dashboard to reposition them. Click and drag the corners of each report card to resize them. Use the grid layout to create a clean, organized appearance with your most important metrics prominently displayed.
Tip
Place your most critical KPIs in the top-left position where users typically look first.
7
Configure dashboard settings
Click the Settings gear icon in the top right of your dashboard. Here you can set up Auto-refresh intervals, configure Email Reports for scheduled delivery, and adjust Sharing Permissions. Save your settings and give your dashboard a final review.
Tip
Enable auto-refresh for live dashboards that need real-time updates, but be mindful of your query limits.
8
Save and share your dashboard
Click Save Dashboard to preserve all your changes. To share with team members, click the Share button and enter their email addresses or copy the shareable link. You can also export your dashboard as a PDF by clicking Export in the dashboard menu.
Tip
Consider creating different permission levels - view-only for stakeholders and edit access for team members who need to modify reports.
Troubleshooting
Reports show 'No Data' or empty charts
Verify that your selected events have been tracked and have data within your chosen date range. Check your Event Implementation and ensure events are being sent correctly to Mixpanel.
Dashboard loads slowly or times out
Reduce the date range for your reports or limit the number of reports on a single dashboard. Consider using saved cohorts instead of complex user filters to improve query performance.
Cannot add certain report types
Check your Mixpanel plan limits as some report types may not be available on all plans. Ensure you have the necessary permissions and that your project has sufficient data for advanced report types like Flows or Retention.
Shared dashboard not visible to team members
Verify that team members have been added to your Mixpanel project and have appropriate permissions. Check that the dashboard sharing settings are configured correctly and that recipients have accepted their project invitations.
