Quick Answer
Deep research mode on Claude allows for comprehensive analysis and multi-step reasoning on complex topics. This feature is available through the conversation settings and requires a Pro subscription to access advanced research capabilities.
Prerequisites
- Active Claude Pro or Team subscription
- Updated web browser or Claude mobile app
- Stable internet connection
- Basic familiarity with Claude's interface
1
Access Claude's conversation interface
Open your web browser and navigate to claude.ai. Sign in to your Claude Pro or Team account. Click on New Conversation to start a fresh chat session.
Tip
Ensure you're using the latest version of your browser for optimal performance
2
Open conversation settings
Look for the Settings icon (gear symbol) in the top-right corner of the conversation window. Click on it to open the conversation preferences menu.
3
Navigate to research options
In the settings menu, locate the Research Mode section. You'll see options for Standard, Enhanced, and Deep Research modes.
Tip
Deep Research mode uses more computational resources and may take longer to respond
4
Enable deep research mode
Select the Deep Research radio button. A confirmation dialog will appear explaining the feature benefits and usage limits. Click Enable Deep Research to confirm your selection.
Tip
You can see your remaining deep research queries in the settings panel
5
Configure research parameters
Set your research depth using the slider from Focused to Comprehensive. Choose your preferred output format: Summary, Detailed Analysis, or Research Report. Enable Citation Tracking if you need source references.
Tip
Comprehensive mode provides the most thorough analysis but uses more of your quota
6
Apply settings and start research
Click Apply Settings to save your configuration. The interface will refresh and display a Deep Research Mode Active indicator at the top of the chat. You can now submit complex research queries.
Tip
Use specific, well-structured questions to get the best results from deep research mode
7
Verify mode activation
Look for the blue Deep Research badge next to the input field. Test the mode by asking a complex analytical question. Claude will display a Researching... progress indicator during analysis.
Tip
The first response may take 30-60 seconds as Claude performs comprehensive analysis
Troubleshooting
Deep Research option is grayed out
Upgrade to Claude Pro or verify your subscription status in Account Settings. Free tier users have limited access to research features.
Research mode keeps reverting to standard
Clear your browser cache and cookies for claude.ai. Try using an incognito/private browsing window to test if the setting persists.
Deep research responses are taking too long
Check your internet connection stability. Try switching to Enhanced mode temporarily, or refresh the page and re-enable deep research mode.
Cannot find the Settings gear icon
Update your browser or Claude app to the latest version. The settings location may vary on mobile - look for Three dots menu > Conversation Settings.
