How to organize chats with folders on ChatGPT
Quick Answer
ChatGPT allows you to organize conversations into custom folders through the sidebar menu. Simply create folders and drag existing chats into them for better organization.
Prerequisites
- Active ChatGPT account
- ChatGPT Plus or Team subscription
- Access to ChatGPT web interface
- Multiple existing chat conversations
1
Access the ChatGPT sidebar
Open ChatGPT in your web browser and ensure you're logged into your account. Look for the sidebar on the left side of the screen that displays your chat history. If the sidebar is collapsed, click the hamburger menu icon (three horizontal lines) in the top-left corner to expand it.
Tip
The sidebar may auto-collapse on smaller screens. You can pin it open by clicking the pin icon.
2
Create a new folder
In the sidebar, locate the "+ New Folder" button or folder icon near the top of your chat list. Click on it to create a new folder. A dialog box will appear prompting you to enter a folder name. Type a descriptive name like
Work Projects or Learning and press Enter or click Create.Tip
Use clear, descriptive folder names that reflect the purpose or topic of the conversations you'll store in them.
3
Organize existing chats into folders
To move an existing chat into a folder, click and hold on the chat title in your sidebar, then drag it over the folder you want to place it in. The folder will highlight when you hover over it. Release the mouse button to drop the chat into the folder. Alternatively, right-click on a chat and select "Move to Folder" from the context menu.
Tip
You can move multiple chats at once by holding Ctrl (or Cmd on Mac) while selecting chats.
4
Create folders with keyboard shortcuts
For faster folder creation, use the keyboard shortcut
Ctrl + Shift + F (or Cmd + Shift + F on Mac) while in the ChatGPT interface. This will immediately open the new folder creation dialog without needing to navigate to the sidebar button.5
Rename and customize folders
To rename a folder, right-click on the folder name in the sidebar and select "Rename Folder". You can also click on the three dots menu next to the folder name and choose rename. Type the new name and press Enter to save the changes.
Tip
Folder names can include emojis and special characters to make them more visually distinctive.
6
Navigate and manage folder contents
Click on a folder to expand it and view all chats contained within. You can collapse folders by clicking on them again or using the arrow icon next to the folder name. To remove a chat from a folder, drag it back to the main chat list or right-click and select "Remove from Folder".
Tip
Folders automatically show the number of conversations they contain in parentheses next to the folder name.
7
Delete and reorganize folders
To delete a folder, right-click on it and select "Delete Folder". Note that this will not delete the chats inside - they will be moved back to your main chat list. You can also drag folders to reorder them in your sidebar for better organization.
Tip
Before deleting a folder, consider if you might want to use a similar organization system in the future.
Troubleshooting
Folder creation option is not visible
Ensure you have a ChatGPT Plus or Team subscription as folder organization is a premium feature. Free accounts may not have access to this functionality.
Drag and drop is not working
Try refreshing the page and ensure you're using a supported browser like Chrome, Firefox, or Safari. Clear your browser cache if the issue persists.
Chats disappear when moving to folders
Check inside the target folder - the chat may have been moved successfully. If truly missing, check your chat history settings and try logging out and back in.
Folders are not syncing across devices
Folder organization syncs through your ChatGPT account. Ensure you're logged into the same account on all devices and wait a few minutes for synchronization to complete.
