How to enable voice mode on ChatGPT
Quick Answer
Voice mode on ChatGPT allows you to have spoken conversations with the AI. Access it through the ChatGPT mobile app by tapping the headphone icon next to the message input field.
Prerequisites
- ChatGPT Plus or Pro subscription
- Mobile device with ChatGPT app installed
- Microphone access enabled
- Active internet connection
1
Open the ChatGPT mobile app
Launch the ChatGPT app on your iOS or Android device. Make sure you're signed in to your ChatGPT Plus or Pro account, as voice mode is not available for free users.
Tip
Voice mode is currently only available on mobile devices, not on the web version
2
Start a new conversation or open existing chat
Either tap New Chat to start a fresh conversation or select an existing chat thread from your conversation history where you want to use voice mode.
3
Locate the voice mode button
Look for the headphone icon located to the right of the text input field at the bottom of your screen. This icon represents the voice mode feature.
Tip
If you don't see the headphone icon, ensure your app is updated to the latest version
4
Tap the headphone icon
Tap the headphone icon to initiate voice mode. The app may request microphone permissions if this is your first time using the feature.
5
Grant microphone permissions
If prompted, tap Allow when asked for microphone access. On iOS, you may also need to go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone and enable access for ChatGPT.
Tip
Without microphone access, voice mode cannot function properly
6
Wait for voice mode to activate
The screen will change to show a pulsing animation or sound wave visualization. You'll hear a brief chime indicating that ChatGPT is ready to listen to your voice input.
Tip
The activation usually takes 2-3 seconds depending on your internet connection
7
Start speaking to ChatGPT
Begin speaking naturally into your device's microphone. ChatGPT will process your speech and respond with both text and voice. You can interrupt the AI's response by simply starting to speak again.
Tip
Speak clearly and at a normal pace for best recognition accuracy
8
End voice mode when finished
To exit voice mode, tap the X button or close icon that appears on the voice mode screen. You'll return to the regular text-based chat interface.
Tip
Voice mode will also automatically end after a period of inactivity
Troubleshooting
Voice mode button not visible
Ensure you have a ChatGPT Plus or Pro subscription and the latest version of the mobile app. Voice mode is not available for free users or on web browsers.
Microphone not picking up voice
Check your device's microphone permissions in Settings > Apps > ChatGPT > Permissions and ensure microphone access is enabled. Also test your microphone in other apps.
Voice mode keeps disconnecting
Verify you have a stable internet connection. Voice mode requires continuous connectivity. Try switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data to identify connection issues.
ChatGPT not responding to voice commands
Speak more clearly and reduce background noise. If the issue persists, try restarting the app or toggling voice mode off and on again.
