How to remove backgrounds with AI on Canva

Quick Answer

Canva's AI-powered Background Remover automatically detects and removes backgrounds from images with one click. Simply upload your image, select it, and click the Background Remover effect in the Effects panel.

Prerequisites

  1. Active Canva account
  2. Image with clear subject
  3. Canva Pro subscription for unlimited background removal
  4. Image uploaded to Canva or available in stock library
1

Upload and select your image

Open Canva and create a new design or open an existing one. Click Uploads in the left sidebar and drag your image into Canva, or select from Photos to use stock images. Click on the image to select it on your canvas.
Tip
Choose images with clear subjects and distinct edges for best AI background removal results.
2

Access the Effects panel

With your image selected, click Effects in the top toolbar. This will open the Effects panel on the left side of your screen showing various image editing options.
3

Find and apply Background Remover

In the Effects panel, scroll down or use the search bar to find Background Remover. Click on it to instantly apply AI background removal to your selected image. The AI will automatically detect and remove the background.
Tip
The Background Remover effect may take a few seconds to process depending on image complexity.
4

Review and refine the results

Examine the background removal results. If needed, click Edit next to Background Remover in the Effects panel. Use the Brush tool to manually add back parts of the subject or Erase to remove additional background areas the AI missed.
Tip
Zoom in to check edges and fine details for more precise manual adjustments.
5

Adjust transparency and blending

Use the Transparency slider in the top toolbar to adjust the opacity of your subject. This is useful when placing the image over backgrounds or other elements for better blending.
6

Add a new background (optional)

To add a new background, go to Elements or Photos in the left sidebar and select a background image or color. Drag it to your canvas and use Position > Send to back to place it behind your subject.
Tip
Consider the lighting and color scheme of your original image when choosing a new background for realistic results.
7

Download your edited image

Click Share in the top right corner, then select Download. Choose PNG format to preserve transparency, or JPG if you've added a solid background. Click Download to save your background-removed image.
Tip
Always use PNG format when you want to maintain the transparent background for future use.

Troubleshooting

Background Remover option is grayed out or not available
Ensure you have a Canva Pro subscription as Background Remover is a premium feature. Also check that you have an image selected on the canvas before accessing Effects.
AI removed parts of the main subject
Click Edit next to Background Remover and use the Brush tool to paint back the removed subject areas. Adjust brush size for precision and zoom in for detailed work.
Background wasn't completely removed
Use the manual Erase tool in the Background Remover editor to clean up remaining background areas. Try working with a smaller brush size for detailed edges and corners.
Edges look jagged or unnatural
In the Background Remover editor, use the Smooth option to soften harsh edges. You can also slightly reduce the image size or apply a subtle Blur effect to the edges for more natural blending.
