How to add textures and effects on Canva

Quick Answer

Adding textures and effects in Canva involves selecting your element, clicking the Effects button in the toolbar, and choosing from various options like shadows, glows, and textures. You can customize intensity, color, and direction of effects to enhance your design.

Prerequisites

  1. Active Canva account
  2. Basic understanding of Canva interface
  3. Design or element already created in Canva
  4. Internet connection
1

Select your element or background

Click on the element, text, or background you want to add textures or effects to. Make sure the item is selected (you'll see selection handles around it). For background textures, click on an empty area of your canvas first.
Tip
You can apply effects to images, shapes, text, and even the entire background of your design.
2

Access the Effects panel

With your element selected, look for the Effects button in the top toolbar. Click on it to open the effects panel on the left side of your screen. If you don't see Effects in the toolbar, try clicking the three dots (...) for more options.
Tip
The Effects button only appears when you have a compatible element selected.
3

Choose your effect type

Browse through the available effect categories:
  • Shadow: Adds drop shadows and inner shadows
  • Glow: Creates outer and inner glows
  • Splice: Adds splicing and duotone effects
  • Background Remover: For removing backgrounds
  • Blur: Applies motion and background blur
Click on any effect to preview it on your element.
Tip
Hover over effects to see a quick preview before applying them.
4

Apply and customize the effect

Click on your desired effect to apply it. Once applied, you'll see customization options appear below the effect. Common settings include:
  • Intensity/Opacity: Drag the slider to adjust strength
  • Color: Click the color picker to change effect color
  • Angle: Adjust direction for shadows and glows
  • Distance: Control how far the effect extends
Tip
Start with lower intensity settings and gradually increase to avoid overwhelming your design.
5

Add texture overlays

For texture effects, go to Elements in the left sidebar and search for texture or overlay. Select a texture element and drag it over your design. Change the blending mode by selecting the texture, then clicking Transparency in the toolbar and choosing blend modes like Multiply, Overlay, or Screen.
Tip
Reduce the transparency of texture overlays to 20-50% for subtle effects.
6

Layer multiple effects

You can combine multiple effects on the same element. With your element still selected, return to the Effects panel and add another effect. The effects will stack on top of each other. Use the Applied effects section to manage or remove individual effects.
Tip
Be careful not to over-apply effects as this can make your design look cluttered.
7

Fine-tune and preview

Zoom out to see how your effects look in the context of the full design. Make final adjustments to intensity, color, and positioning. Click anywhere outside the element to deselect it and see the final result. Use Ctrl+Z (or Cmd+Z on Mac) to undo changes if needed.
Tip
View your design at 100% zoom to see how effects will appear in the final output.

Troubleshooting

Effects button is grayed out or missing
Make sure you have a compatible element selected. Effects don't work on all elements - try selecting text, shapes, or uploaded images instead.
Effect looks different than expected
Check your element's original colors and transparency. Some effects interact differently with transparent backgrounds or certain colors. Try adjusting the effect intensity or changing the base element color.
Cannot see texture overlay properly
Ensure the texture layer is positioned above your base element in the layers panel. Try changing the blending mode to Multiply or Overlay and adjust transparency to 30-70%.
Design looks pixelated after adding effects
This usually happens with low-resolution images. Try using higher quality images or vector elements. Also check that you're not over-applying blur or glow effects with very high intensity settings.
